This report follows a brainstorming discussion by the IMPALA board on the topic and looks in particular at the opportunities and challenges for the independent label community, including:

  • What things AI can do – and what things it can’t
  • How legal frameworks and copyright are dealing with the new challenges presented by artificial intelligence and generative AI
  • Practical benefits and opportunities of AI for labels
  • How AI can enhance, accelerate or streamline creative and operational processes
  • The challenges, opportunities and complexities of generative AI and the music business – including licensing, attribution and monetisation.

One Step Ahead is an IMPALA-led project, piloted by IMPALA’s digital committee, in partnership with CMU Insights and with the support of Merlin
